He also is the Head of the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. Furthermore, he is the founder and President of the BRA Foundation. This charitable foundation is for women facing mastectomy and their options of breast reconstruction. He also is the chair of the London Breast Meeting and the Co-director of the Masters in Breast Surgery Programm.

Being a surgeon in the 5th generation of his family, he studied medicine in Paris and Basel, where he graduated from the Medical School of the University of Basel in 1995. He worked in hospitals and clinics in Burgdorf, Bern and Basel among others in the field of general surgery, visceral and transplantation surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery. He studied and did research in Basel, Bern and at the Yale University. In 2005, he became an FMH Specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and worked as a senior physician for plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at the University Hospital Basel. In 2006, he began his fellowship in microsurgical reconstruction at the St.Thomas’ Hospital, where he later was appointed consultant and director of the Department. Under his leadership, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at St Thomas Hospital became renowned worldwide.

One of his specialties is the aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery and onco-plastic surgery, especially after a mastectomy. In his research, he tries to improve the longevity in breast reduction and breast lift procedures. Another field is the microsurgery and he performs more than 150 tissue reconstruction per year. He also continually educates as co-director of the European School of Reconstructive Microsurgery. He won several awards for his work and research, for example the Dirk Schaefer Research Prize and the Research Prize of Swiss Society in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
He is a member of numerous national and international professional societies, among those are the Swiss Society for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SGPRAC), the Swiss Society for Senology, the German-Speaking Working Group for the peripheral nerves and blood vessels, the European Association of Plastic Surgeons EURAPS and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic surgeons. He also is listed on the GMC Specialist Register.

His expertise covers all aspects of aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, but his specialty is breast cancer surgery and onco-plastic surgery as well as surgery after weight loss. After a double mastectomy- he uses own tissue or implants combined with a matrix to reconstruct the breast immediately. In microsurgery, he uses DIEP, SGAP, PAP or TUG flap techniques to reconstruct tissue and microsurgically treats chronic lymphedema of the arm by transferring lymph nodes.

He cares for his patients and listens carefully during consultations what they have to say and what their needs are. Then he discusses and explains which of the possible options is the best for the individual patient. Besides German and English, he also is able to conversate in French, Italian and Farsi.
